Democratic Congressman Wiley Nickel has outlined a plan to form a "Shadow Cabinet" aimed at countering policies that could be implemented by the Trump administration.
Nickel described the initiative as a proactive measure to resist potential actions by a Republican-led government while advocating for progressive policies.
The proposed cabinet would include Democratic lawmakers assuming unofficial "shadow" roles to challenge Trump’s policies and highlight alternative approaches.

“If Trump attempts to weaponize the justice system against his political opponents, with Matt Gaetz at the helm, we could see incoming Senator Adam Schiff as our shadow Attorney General, arguing against replacing our independent prosecutors with Trump loyalists,” Nickel said.
Nickel suggested that Congresswoman Johanna Hayes, a former National Teacher of the Year, could serve as a shadow education secretary if Trump pursued the elimination of the Department of Education. “Congresswoman Johanna Hayes… could step up as shadow education secretary to loudly defend public education in the United States,” he said.
On foreign policy, Nickel proposed Congressman Greg Meeks as a shadow Secretary of State to address concerns over international relations and democracy. “If Trump orders Marco Rubio to hand Ukraine and much of eastern Europe to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Congressman Greg Meeks as Shadow Secretary of State could be a strong voice in support of maintaining international relationships and protecting democracy at home and abroad,” Nickel argued.

Other suggested shadow roles include Senator Michael Bennet as a shadow Treasury Secretary and Congresswoman Susan DelBene as a shadow Commerce Secretary.
Nickel noted their potential to push back on Trump’s economic policies. “Senator Michael Bennet… and Congresswoman Susan DelBene… could help ensure the middle class and small businesses have a voice in government and call out Trump's proposed tax cuts for billionaires and corporations,” he said.
For defense, Nickel proposed Congressman Adam Smith as shadow Defense Secretary to challenge any potential misuse of the military. “Congressman Adam Smith… could counter Trump’s threat to use military force against his political opponents and work to ensure that the Department of Defense stays loyal to the Constitution and not some wannabe dictator,” Nickel stated.

Nickel also highlighted Senator Tammy Duckworth for Veterans Affairs, Congresswoman Kathy Castor for the EPA, and Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro for Health and Human Services.
He suggested Duckworth could push back against cuts to veterans’ benefits, Castor could defend environmental protections, and DeLauro could oppose any nationwide abortion bans or efforts to reduce Medicare funding.
“If Trump hands over the EPA to big oil ally Lee Zeldin, we could see Congresswoman Kathy Castor pushing back for environmental protection and conservation to protect the air we breathe and the water we drink,” Nickel said.
“And if Trump pushes to ban abortion nationwide, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro could step in as Shadow Secretary of Health and Human Services to defend women’s right to choose and argue against the gutting of Medicare by Trump and his cronies.”
Nickel emphasized that the Shadow Cabinet’s purpose would extend beyond opposing Trump’s policies.
“The Shadow Cabinet isn’t just about opposing extreme MAGA attacks on our government. It’s also about making clear what we stand for, not just what we’re against,” he concluded.
