According to a CNN report, reporters were seen crying and hugging in the hallways after the news broke, underscoring the polarized atmosphere surrounding Trump’s administration.

“We’ve seen people today, our fellow reporters, crying, hugging in the hallways,” CNN’s Paula Reid said. “I’ve gotten text messages from sources in the Trump administration, the Biden administration — no one is endorsing this.”

Reid noted that Gaetz’s nomination reflects his and Trump’s shared belief that federal institutions have been weaponized against conservatives. “He really does feel victimized by the Justice Department, by the FBI. Trump also feels that way. They share that empathy,” Reid said. “And really the only check on him if he becomes the nation’s top law enforcement official will be the judiciary and juries.”

Gaetz, a vocal Trump ally and critic of the Department of Justice (DOJ), resigned from Congress following his nomination. His selection signals Trump’s intention to overhaul the DOJ and prioritize accountability.

In a statement, Trump celebrated Gaetz’s nomination, highlighting his record as a fighter for conservative principles.

“It is my Great Honor to announce that Congressman Matt Gaetz, of Florida, is hereby nominated to be The Attorney General of the United States,” Trump declared. “Matt will end Weaponized Government, protect our Borders, dismantle Criminal Organizations, and restore Americans’ badly-shattered Faith and Confidence in the Justice Department.”

Known for his confrontational style and unapologetic support for Trump, Gaetz has been a prominent figure in Congress since his election in 2017.

Representing a conservative district in Florida’s panhandle, he has built his career on challenging the Democratic establishment and advocating for Trump’s policies.

His nomination as Attorney General highlights Trump’s focus on reshaping federal institutions and pushing back against what many conservatives view as partisan overreach.

Critics of the nomination have called it destabilizing, while supporters see it as a long-overdue effort to restore trust in the DOJ. “This is a very serious pick, and Donald Trump is obviously telegraphing that he means business,” said Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) in an interview with CNN. “Matt Gaetz is one of his best weapons in Congress. He’s taking him out of Congress, and he’s giving him the Attorney General’s office.”

For Trump’s base, the nomination is a significant victory.

Gaetz’s reputation for standing up to establishment figures and his willingness to challenge norms have made him a favorite among conservatives who see him as an advocate for their values.

His role as Attorney General is expected to bring a dramatic shift in the DOJ’s approach to issues such as border security, criminal justice, and the perceived politicization of federal agencies.

As the confirmation process looms, Gaetz’s nomination sets the stage for a contentious debate that could become a defining moment in Trump’s second term.

With supporters and opponents gearing up for the confirmation battle, Gaetz’s appointment represents a pivotal chapter in Trump’s effort to reshape Washington.
