At a recent rally attended by vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz, comedian George Lopez stirred up controversy with jokes addressing former President Donald Trump’s border wall and a series of comments referencing Mexican stereotypes.

Actor and comedian George Lopez speaks before Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz during a campaign rally at Trevor G. Browne High School in Phoenix on Oct. 26, 2024.

Lopez, known for his outspoken anti-Trump stance, used his set to make several pointed remarks related to Trump’s policies and to voice his support for Vice President Kamala Harris, referring to her as “the real deal.”

Lopez, a comedian of Mexican heritage, targeted Trump’s 2016 proposal to build a southern border wall, joking about the potential for the materials to be stolen if left unattended. “Donald Trump said he was going to build a wall,” Lopez said to the audience, “and you better build it in one day because if you leave that material out there overnight…”

The comedian continued with a quip about Trump’s insistence that Mexico would pay for the wall, stating, “He also said he was going to get Mexico to pay for the wall. I wish you would’ve asked me. We can’t even split a check at a restaurant.”

Alongside his commentary on Trump, Lopez expressed his long-standing support for Kamala Harris, recounting a personal connection to the vice president. “I have known Kamala for 16 years. That is who she is,” Lopez stated. “I knew her mother, a scientist … All positive. All love. That’s what you do when you’re a great mother, and we’re gonna send her daughter, Kamala Harris, to the White House.”

The comedian’s remarks at the rally follow a history of anti-Trump rhetoric that has often drawn backlash.

In 2020, Lopez made headlines when he appeared to accept an alleged Iranian bounty on Trump’s life. Following the death of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, reports circulated of a proposed $80 million bounty on Trump.

On social media, Lopez responded, “We’ll do it for half,” implying he would take the bounty for $40 million.

Although Lopez later indicated that the comment was made in jest, it triggered widespread criticism.

Lopez’s history of controversial statements about Trump dates back to the early days of the former president’s administration.

In 2018, he faced misdemeanor battery charges after reportedly clashing with a Trump supporter in a restaurant, further contributing to his reputation as a vocal critic of the former president.

The rally, part of an ongoing effort to mobilize support for Walz and Harris, took place amid a heated campaign season.

Walz’s campaign has ramped up outreach efforts across the country, seeking to gather votes for the ticket in what could be a close election.
