A heated debate erupted on ABC News' This Week panel Sunday when former Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus took aim at the rhetoric of Democrats following the assassination attempt on 2024 Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
The July 13 attempt on Trump’s life has become a focal point of discussion, with political figures from both parties weighing in on the broader implications.
The discussion became tense when Priebus interrupted former Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairwoman Donna Brazile after she praised the Biden-Harris administration’s response to the assassination attempt.

Priebus criticized her remarks, accusing Democrats of contributing to the dangerous political climate by branding Trump as a "threat to democracy."
“You can’t sit here and act like you have a corner on this message. Because you don’t,” Priebus said, as Brazile tried to interject.
Brazile quickly responded, calling Priebus’s comments "mis-truthing." The exchange continued to escalate as Priebus countered, “That’s why you’re not winning. That’s why Harris is behind, and that’s why she’s going to lose.”
The conversation took another turn when This Week host George Stephanopoulos intervened, pushing Priebus to explicitly state that Democrats were not to blame for the attempt on Trump’s life.

Priebus, while complying, also pointed out what he believes is a broader issue with how Trump has been portrayed by his political opponents.
“I would not blame Democrats!” Priebus stated, before adding, “But it’s also wrong to paint President Trump as a threat to democracy that’s gonna end the United States of America.” He then asked, “What does that do to people’s heads when you do that?”
The debate over rhetoric continued, with Brazile shifting the discussion to Republicans' stance on immigration, a hot-button issue in the 2024 race.
Priebus quickly redirected the conversation back to the assassination attempt, reminding Brazile that they were discussing Trump's near-death experience. Brazile acknowledged that Democrats had condemned the act but called for the end of what she referred to as "lies" from the Republican Party.

“The Democrats condemned that. But the lies, the floodgates of lies must stop!” Brazile said.
Priebus immediately pushed back, asking, “What lies? Like that President Trump is gonna monitor women’s pregnancies?” His comment referenced accusations tied to Project 2025, a policy initiative that has been mischaracterized by some as involving invasive monitoring of pregnancies.

Brazile’s response did not directly address Project 2025, but Priebus took the opportunity to highlight what he believes is a pattern of misleading claims by Democrats. “Project 2025 has nothing to do with President Trump,” Priebus said. “But you know what? It’s a good talking point for the Democrats, and they keep saying it.”
The panel exchange underscores the deeply polarized environment surrounding the 2024 presidential race, with both parties trading accusations of fostering division and misinformation.
The assassination attempt on Trump, the first against a major political figure in recent history, has only heightened tensions as the election draws nearer.
