In a chilling case that has rocked Geneva County, Alabama, Joselina Elizabeth Lopez faces charges of intentional [1] murder following the brutal death of 41-year-old Benito Morales Guzman.
Lopez, who was arrested on August 29, allegedly shot and dismembered Guzman using a chainsaw while their 4-year-old child was in the home.
The child, who has autism and birth defects, may have been present during the grisly act.
The horrific discovery was made on August 27 when deputies responded to a missing person’s report at the couple’s residence near Grady Garner Road and New Hinson Road in the Fadette community.
They found Guzman’s dismembered body stuffed into garbage bags and placed in the backseat and trunk of a car parked behind the house.
The scene was described by Investigator Philip Shuler from the State Bureau of Investigation, who testified about the “strong odor” emanating from the vehicle and the discovery of a chainsaw alongside Guzman’s remains, which were in approximately 10-15 pieces.
Further searches of the house revealed a disturbing arsenal: a pistol, a hatchet, two knives, and two additional chainsaws, alongside various receipts indicating recent purchases of these tools.
Marks from the chainsaw were evident on the home’s floor, supporting the belief that Guzman was not only shot five times but subsequently dismembered in the same location.
During a recent bond hearing, Lopez claimed self-defense, stating through her attorneys that Guzman owed money to a drug dealer and her family was threatened over his debts.
Despite this defense, prosecutors countered there was no evidence to suggest she was defending herself at the time of Guzman’s killing.
They noted that while Lopez had bruises, it could not be conclusively linked to defense actions against Guzman.
Given the gruesome nature of the crime and Lopez’s alleged connections outside the U.S., prosecutors argued for her to be held without bond.
They highlighted concerns over her potential ties to Mexico, although her defense strongly refuted this, stating Lopez has never left the United States and offered to submit to ankle monitoring if released on bond.
The community remains in shock over the brutality of the crime, particularly the involvement of a chainsaw in the murder and dismemberment process, aspects that have drawn significant attention to the case.
As the local court awaits a decision from Judge Stephen Smith on whether Lopez will be granted bond, the case continues to unravel, exposing dark undertones of drug-related threats and violent retribution.
The ruling, expected within two days of the hearing, will determine whether Lopez will face trial from behind bars or under monitored release.
