The incident, captured on video, quickly circulated online, sparking debate over whether the Minnesota governor deliberately avoided responding to the question.

In the video, Walz is seen greeting supporters and answering a few questions. As he interacts with the crowd, someone off-camera asks, “What’s your reaction to the six hostages being found dead in Gaza?” However, instead of addressing the question, Walz is heard saying, “All right, thanks everybody,” before walking away.

Later that day, Walz issued a statement on his X account, condemning Hamas and expressing condolences to the family of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, one of the hostages who had been killed.

“The anguish of losing a child is something no family should have to endure. Gwen and I send our deepest condolences to the Goldberg-Polin family, after Hamas’ murder of their son Hersh,” Walz wrote. “Hamas is a brutal terrorist organization – and we condemn their continued atrocities against both Americans and Israelis in the strongest possible terms.”

Walz’s statement came after the Israel Defense Forces discovered the bodies of six Israeli hostages during a rescue operation in the tunnels beneath Gaza’s Rafah. Among those killed was Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who had been held by Hamas since the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas on October 7.

Walz’s appearance at the Minnesota State Fair, intended as a campaign stop to engage with voters, was overshadowed by the incident and the subsequent reactions online.
