The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) reported that the incident began around 3:20 a.m. when uniformed officers from the West Los Angeles Division responded to a burglary call in the 2600 block of South Halm Avenue.

Upon arrival, the officers were informed by a resident that Adams had attempted to break into his home before successfully entering the home of an elderly neighbor by breaking her window.

The elderly woman managed to flee her residence, but shortly afterward, a fire was set inside her home.

Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) personnel also arrived on the scene and observed Adams inside the burning residence.

LAPD officers attempted to take Adams into custody, but he was armed with a knife and lunged at them. In response, one officer fired two beanbag rounds at Adams in an attempt to subdue him.

Despite this, Adams refused to surrender and barricaded himself inside the home.

As the situation escalated, the LAPD’s Metropolitan Division Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team was called to the scene.

The SWAT team established containment around the residence while continuing efforts to resolve the standoff. In the newly released video, Adams can be seen exiting the house through a side window, covered only by a blanket.

SWAT officers repeatedly instructed him to drop the blanket, show his hands, and comply with their commands.

They also issued multiple warnings about the potential use of force.

Ignoring these commands, Adams raised his right arm, revealing a large butcher knife, and charged at the officers.

In response, officers opened fire, simultaneously deploying a TASER. Adams was struck by gunfire and fell to the ground, dropping the knife before reaching the officers.

Los Angeles Fire Department Tactical Emergency Medical Support (TEMS) personnel immediately assessed Adams and determined that he was deceased. No officers or other community members were injured during the incident.

The LAPD’s Force Investigation Division (FID) is currently investigating the shooting, as is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.

The investigation is ongoing, with investigators reviewing witness statements, physical and electronic records, and forensic evidence to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the event.

The Los Angeles Fire Department’s Arson investigators are also examining the cause of the fire set inside the elderly woman’s home.

The LAPD identified the officer involved in the shooting as Police Officer III Timothy Jang, a member of the Metropolitan Division/SWAT.

The department emphasized that their understanding of the incident might evolve as more evidence is gathered and analyzed.

Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) Force Investigation Division is investigating an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) that occurred with SWAT in West Los Angeles Division.

On July 29, 2024, around 3:20 a.m., West Los Angeles Division uniformed officers responded to a radio call of a Burglary Suspect in the 2600 block of South Halm Avenue. When the officers arrived, they met with the person who had called the police and were told the suspect, later identified as Lavell Adams, attempted to break into his home before breaking his elderly neighbor’s window and entering her residence, causing her to flee. Shortly thereafter, the woman’s house was set on fire.

Los Angeles Fire Department personnel responded and also observed Adams inside the residence. While inside the residence, officers attempted to take Adams into custody; however, Adams was armed with a knife and lunged toward officers, resulting in one officer deploying two Beanbag shotgun rounds towards Adams, who then barricaded himself inside the residence while still armed with the knife.

Metropolitan Division Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) responded and were establishing containment when Adams exited the residence through a side window covered with a blanket. Special Weapons and Tactics officers gave multiple commands for Adams to show his hands, drop the blanket, and comply with their directions. Multiple warnings related to force being used were also verbalized to Adams. Adams did not comply; instead, he lifted his right arm, holding a large butcher knife, and charged the officers, resulting in an Officer-Involved Shooting with the simultaneous deployment of a TASER. The suspect was struck by gunfire and fell to the ground, dropping the knife.

Los Angeles Fire Department Tactical Emergency Medical Support (TEMS) unit immediately assessed Adams, who was determined to be deceased. No officers or other community members were injured due to this incident.

Force Investigation Division (FID) investigators responded to the scene and are investigating this incident. Los Angeles Fire Department Arson investigators also responded to the scene and are investigating the fire at the residence.
