Newly released bodycam footage sheds light on a tense incident involving Miami Dolphins star wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who was detained by Miami-Dade police on Sunday outside Hard Rock Stadium.

The footage captures the escalation of the situation after Hill was stopped for speeding and subsequently cited for careless driving and a seat belt violation.

According to ESPN, Hill was pulled over by police for speeding, but the encounter quickly turned confrontational, with officers eventually detaining him.

Teammate Calais Campbell also became involved when he pulled over in an attempt to de-escalate the situation.

Body camera footage shows the moment officers approached Hill’s vehicle and knocked on his window, which immediately drew objections from the eight-time Pro Bowler. “Hey don’t knock on my window like that,” Hill is heard saying to the officer, who questioned Hill about not wearing a seat belt.

The officer explained that he was trying to get Hill’s attention with the knock. Hill, who had already handed over his license, responded by asking the officer to issue a ticket so he could leave, then rolled his window back up.

This move led to further tension between Hill and the officers. The police objected to the window being rolled up, and when Hill partially lowered it again, officers ordered him out of the car.

The footage shows Hill complying, stating that he was going to get out of the vehicle, but as he began to exit, a second officer pulled open the car door and, with the help of a third officer, forcibly pulled Hill out of the vehicle and brought him to the ground.

“Hey Drew, I’m getting arrested,” Hill said, appearing to be on the phone with his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. Officers then placed Hill in handcuffs as more officers surrounded him.

The tension escalated when an officer aggressively pushed Hill down to sit on the curb after he didn’t move quickly enough. Hill can be heard explaining, “I just had surgery on my knee,” to which the officer replied, “Did you have surgery on your ears when we told you to put your window down?”

In an interview with NBC News following the incident, Hill expressed concern over how the situation could have escalated further if he wasn’t a high-profile NFL player. “If I wasn’t Tyreek Hill, Lord knows, I probably would have been, like, worst-case scenario, I would have been shot or locked up and put behind bars, you know, for a simple speeding ticket,” Hill said. “And that’s crazy that officers would take it to that level.”

The Miami Dolphins later released a statement addressing the incident, commending the Miami-Dade Police Department for releasing the body cam footage but condemning the officers’ handling of the situation. “We are saddened by the overly aggressive and violent conduct directed towards Tyreek Hill, Calais Campbell, and Jonnu Smith by police officers before yesterday’s game,” the team said.

The statement continued, “It is both maddening and heartbreaking to watch the very people we trust to protect our community use such unnecessary force and hostility towards these players, yet it is also a reminder that not every situation like this ends in peace.”

Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie V. Daniels issued a statement confirming the release of 105 minutes and 33 seconds of body camera footage to ensure transparency. “The department is committed to conducting a thorough, objective investigation into this matter, and we will continue to update the public on the outcome of that process,” Daniels said.

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill faced a brief detention due to a driving violation on Sunday morning as he was arriving at Hard Rock Stadium for the season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Despite the incident, Hill’s participation in the game was not hindered, as confirmed by his agent, Drew Rosenhaus.

According to Rosenhaus, the altercation occurred approximately one block from the stadium and was resolved quickly, allowing Hill to join his team for the game. “This morning, WR Tyreek Hill was pulled over for a traffic incident about one block from the stadium and briefly detained by police,” the Dolphins stated. ”

He has since been released. Several teammates saw the incident and stopped to offer support. Tyreek and all other players involved have safely arrived at the stadium and will be available for today’s game.”

Eyewitnesses captured the moment, with photos and videos circulating online showing Hill handcuffed and sitting at the curb while surrounded by law enforcement.

The incident, which unfolded around 10:30 a.m. ET, did not prevent Hill from participating in the game, which kicked off at 1 p.m. ET.

Hill, an eight-time Pro Bowler who has become one of the NFL’s top receivers, is entering his third season with the Dolphins. His career in Miami started in 2022 after a high-profile trade from the Kansas City Chiefs, where he initially entered the league as a fifth-round draft pick.

Last season, Hill led the NFL with 1,799 receiving yards, alongside 119 receptions and 13 touchdowns.

His performance earned him the top spot in the player-voted NFL Top 100 earlier this offseason.

In a strategic move last month, Hill agreed to a restructured contract with the Dolphins, securing $90 million over the next three seasons, with $65 million guaranteed.

This contract adjustment reflects both his value to the team and his expected contributions in the coming years.

The brief detention did not dampen the spirits at Hard Rock Stadium, as Hill was seen gearing up for the game following the incident.

The Dolphins and their fans are looking forward to another standout season from Hill, whose on-field prowess continues to captivate the NFL audience.
