Kamala Harris made her first trip to the U.S.-Mexico border since taking office, visiting Douglas, Arizona, on Friday to address the growing immigration crisis.

Vice President Kamala Harris holds a campaign event near the U.S.-Mexico border at Cochise College’s Douglas Campus on Sept. 27, 2024, in Douglas.

The visit marks Harris’s second border trip during her tenure, following her appointment by Joe Biden over three years ago to handle the situation.

However, the timing and substance of the visit have drawn sharp criticism from various corners, including former President Donald Trump and the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC).

At the event, Harris placed blame on former President Trump for the challenges at the border, accusing him of worsening the situation. “He made the challenges at the border worse, and he is still fanning the flames of fear and division,” Harris said.

She also vowed that if elected president in 2024, she would focus on tightening border security, reducing illegal crossings, and ensuring deportations of those who do not seek asylum through legal processes.

Harris signaled a softer approach by referencing the possibility of “mass amnesty,” which stands in stark contrast to Trump’s stricter immigration policies.

Despite Harris’s pledges, the backlash was immediate.

The National Border Patrol Council, which represents Border Patrol agents, criticized Harris for neglecting the border issue throughout her time in office. In a statement, the NBPC said, “Vice President Harris has ignored the border problem she created for over three years. She goes down there for 20 minutes for a photo op and decides to repeat some of the things the NBPC has said before. But again, where has she been the last 3 1/2 years?”

Kamala Harris claimed to help helped Border Patrol get increased pay for overtime.

The Border Patrol Union says this couldn’t be further from the truth.

The statistics from Harris’s time in office have not helped her case.

Since taking on the role of overseeing the border, illegal crossings have surged, with estimates suggesting more than 12 million people have entered the country during her tenure.

Among these, there have been numerous reports of violent offenders, including rapists and convicted murderers, slipping through the system.

Former President Trump also weighed in on Harris’s border visit, taking to Truth Social to voice his criticisms.

Trump accused Harris of allowing dangerous criminals to enter the country, saying, “Comrade Kamala Harris, who allowed almost 14,000 MURDERERS to freely and openly roam our Country, is now making a Speech in Douglas, Arizona, trying to say she did an OK job with the Border. She didn’t.”

He went on to label Harris as “the Worst Vice President in History, and the Worst Border Czar in History,” claiming that people are dying every day because of her policies.

Harris’s recent border promises include stricter deportation measures and reinforcing border security at ports of entry, but her critics argue that these proposals come too late.

They question why Harris, as vice president, has not pushed for these changes during the past four years, instead favoring policies that have leaned toward amnesty and leniency.

Immigration is expected to remain a central issue in the lead-up to the 2024 election.

Harris appears to be attempting to distance herself from the Biden administration’s handling of the border by promising tougher policies, but her critics, including Trump, are already sharpening their attacks.

As the immigration crisis continues to escalate, with millions crossing the border and criminal activity on the rise, it remains to be seen whether Harris’s latest proposals will resonate with voters or whether her past inaction will overshadow her campaign.
