In an incident that unfolded on Sunday evening, Newton County Sheriff’s Office Corporal Brandon Schreiber was critically injured in a shootout that also resulted in the death of a suspect identified as 37-year-old Andrew Roselius of Clifton, Illinois.

The ordeal began when the Iroquois County Sheriff's Department in Illinois pursued Roselius, who was reportedly armed and had a suspected hostage.

The chase initially moved into Indiana, prompting involvement from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office. The pursuit subsequently returned to Illinois, culminating in Roselius crashing his vehicle in Sheldon.

According to the Illinois State Police (ISP), which is now leading the investigation, Roselius exited his vehicle and gunfire was exchanged.

During this exchange, both Roselius and Corporal Schreiber were struck. Roselius was pronounced dead at the scene, and no hostage was found inside the vehicle.

Corporal Schreiber, a five-year veteran of the department, was initially taken to Iroquois Memorial Hospital.

Due to the severity of his injuries, he was subsequently flown to the Carle Trauma Center in Urbana, where he remains in critical condition.

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office has expressed its gratitude for the support from law enforcement and the community alike. "We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support and prayers from our law enforcement families, both from Indiana and Illinois, as well as from our community," stated Newton County Sheriff Shannon Cothran.

A vigil for Corporal Schreiber was held Monday night on the Newton County Courthouse lawn, demonstrating the community’s solidarity and concern for the injured deputy.

The Illinois State Police will continue to investigate the circumstances of the shootout and the events leading up to it before turning over their findings to the Iroquois County State's Attorney's Office.
