A manhunt is intensifying in Laurel County, Kentucky, following a chaotic shooting spree that left five people injured and multiple vehicles damaged along Interstate 75.

The incident, which occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, has sparked a large-scale search for Joseph A. Couch, identified as a person of interest in the violence that disrupted the weekend commute.

The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, alongside multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, U.S. Marshal Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, are involved in the ongoing search for Couch.

The 32-year-old white male, described as being about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 154 pounds, is considered armed and dangerous.

Authorities were alerted to the incident after reports of gunfire along the interstate in the small city of London, a rural area approximately 75 miles south of Lexington.

Deputy Gilbert Acciardo of the Laurel County Sheriff's Office described arriving at the scene as finding "a madhouse," with nine vehicles showing signs of gunfire, bullet holes, and shattered windows. "Can you imagine that? Just chaotic," Acciardo remarked during a Sunday news conference.

The shooting victims, all currently in stable condition, sustained serious injuries, including one person who was shot in the face.

The violent episode also resulted in a vehicle accident, injuring two additional individuals. Traffic on the interstate was halted in both directions for several hours as investigators worked to secure the scene and gather evidence.

Local officials, including London Mayor Randall Weddle, have urged residents to remain vigilant and indoors, especially during the overnight hours as searches in the nearby rugged terrain continued. "If you think you hear something outside of your home, please do not go outside shooting," Mayor Weddle cautioned, highlighting the potential danger to residents and first responders in the area.

The motivations behind the shooting remain unclear, with initial investigations ruling out road rage as a likely cause.

The incident unfolded just days after a mass shooting in Winder, Georgia, and a separate interstate shooting in Seattle, underscoring a troubling week of gun violence across the country.

Eyewitness accounts from motorists caught in the Saturday chaos tell stories of confusion and fear. Christina DiNoto, who was driving through the area at the time of the shooting, initially mistook the sound of gunfire for a rock hitting her vehicle.

It was only later, upon stopping at a friend's house, that she and her companion learned of the shooting and discovered what appeared to be paint scrapes from bullets on her car.
