A disturbing incident in Irvine, California, ended in tragedy when 38-year-old John Alexander Bash, a quadriplegic man, was brutally stabbed to death in his home by his former caregiver, Aaron Matthew Shindle, 47.

The attack occurred on August 5, when Shindle crashed a minivan into Bash’s home before entering and carrying out the deadly assault.

Surveillance footage captured Shindle driving a Honda Odyssey into Bash’s garage, then entering the house and making his way to the victim’s bedroom, where he repeatedly stabbed Bash.

Bash’s current live-in caregiver discovered the horrifying scene and immediately called 911, describing the situation to dispatchers as a “murder scene.”

The 911 call revealed the caregiver’s panic: “I am a caregiver. Quadriplegic has blood everywhere! This is like a murder scene, I’m not sure what to do!”

Irvine Police Department (IPD) officers quickly responded to the call and began searching the neighborhood for the suspect.

Less than half a mile from the crime scene, an officer spotted Shindle walking near the intersection of Stonecreek South and West Yale Loop.

Body camera footage shows the officer attempting to engage Shindle, asking his name and if he lived in the area. The officer soon noticed Shindle was holding a bloodied knife, the same weapon used to kill Bash.

Despite multiple warnings to drop the knife, Shindle raised the weapon and advanced toward the officer. In response, the officer fired several shots, wounding Shindle.

He was transported to a local hospital but later died from his injuries.

“The male suspect appear[ed] to be the driver of the minivan that crashed into the home and is believed to have killed the victim,” the Irvine Police Department said in a statement following the incident.

Neighbors expressed shock and disbelief at the violent crime. Bash, who had been paralyzed since a 2015 diving accident in Lake Havasu, Arizona, was remembered as a kind and positive figure in the community.

Neighbor Marilyn Botzenhardt, who lived nearby, expressed her sorrow: “He was always really nice to us and I’m just blown away. I can’t believe that. Who would do that?”

Police are still working to determine a motive for the attack. According to IPD Sgt. Karie Davies, the assault seemed to come without warning. “According to what we know, there was no beef,” Davies said. “According to the victim’s family, this was out of the blue. This is something our detectives are going to have to figure out.”

Tributes to Bash poured in on social media from those who knew him, with many expressing their heartbreak over his tragic death. “So very sad that this happened to Johnny,” wrote Irvine resident Jenée MacBeth. “He was a nice guy. It just breaks my heart that his family had to navigate his accident years back which left him paralyzed, and now this horrible, tragic, violent loss of him.”

Another mourner commented, “Johnny is such a sweet guy who has already been through so much. Just terrible.”

The investigation into the attack is ongoing as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to the fatal incident.
