Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) expects Americans to be “shocked” and “appalled” once the preliminary report on the assassination attempt aimed at former President Donald Trump, along with the related security lapses, is disclosed.
Blumenthal’s remarks followed a closed-door briefing with Acting U.S. Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe, who provided an update on the ongoing investigation into the July 13 shooting during Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
“I think the American people are going to be shocked, astonished, and appalled by what we will report to them about the failures by the Secret Service in this assassination attempt on the former president,” Blumenthal told Fox News after the meeting.

He also criticized the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for its lack of transparency. “They ought to be appalled and astonished by the failure of the Department of Homeland Security to be more forthcoming, to be as candid and frank, as it should be.”
Blumenthal did not disclose specific details from the meeting, leaving the public to await the release of the interim report.

Other lawmakers attending the briefing were more cautious in their comments. Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) noted that the upcoming report would be only a preliminary release. “It will be coming out shortly,” Peters said. “And it’ll only be an interim report because there’s a lot more information that we need to find.”
Peters also emphasized that additional details would follow in a full report to provide a complete understanding of what happened, as well as recommendations for future protective measures to prevent similar incidents. “We hope once this report comes out, we can get the additional information necessary to have a complete report of what happened, as well as steps of what we need to do in the future to make sure that this never happens,” he added.
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) echoed the need for a bipartisan approach to the investigation. Johnson expressed frustration with the information provided by Secret Service officials during the briefing. “He’s [Rowe] making the commitment to, you know, provide more information,” Johnson said. “But we’re hoping to get this preliminary report out before this work period. It’s important people realize we are dedicated to a bipartisan product.”
The Secret Service has faced intense scrutiny for the lapses in security and communication that occurred before and during the attempted assassination of Trump.
Now I’m told the Department of Homeland Security is pressuring the Secret Service not to comply with document requests by Congress about the Trump assassination attempt.

Questions have been raised about the agency’s protocols and the measures taken to protect high-profile political figures, including Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and Ohio Sen. JD Vance.
As the internal investigation continues, one notable development involves the retirement of Michael Plati, Assistant Director of the Secret Service’s Office of Protective Operations.
Plati, who was responsible for overseeing the planning and protection of Trump and other political leaders, is ending his tenure on Friday after 27 years with the agency.
While the Secret Service stated that Plati was not asked to resign or retire, sources within the investigation told Fox News that he had been encouraged to step down early.
The forthcoming report is expected to shed light on the circumstances leading up to the failed assassination attempt and the security breaches that allowed it to happen.
