Alex Morgan, the Olympic gold medalist and longtime U.S. women’s national soccer team star, has officially announced her retirement from competitive soccer.

The news came in a video Morgan shared on Thursday via X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, as reported by Fox News.

“I’m retiring,” Morgan said. “I have so much clarity about this decision, and I am so happy to be able to finally tell you. It has been a long time and this decision wasn’t easy. But at the beginning of 2024, I felt in my heart and soul that this was the last season that I would play soccer.”

Morgan leaves behind an incredible legacy with the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT). With 123 career goals, she ranks fifth on the all-time list and also has 53 assists, placing her ninth in U.S. history.

Morgan’s time on the field saw the USWNT win 177 matches, lose just 15, and draw 32. Her impact on the field is undeniable: in the 86 international matches where she scored, the U.S. never lost, recording 76 wins and 10 draws.

Throughout her 224 appearances, she started in 158 games and captained the team 23 times.

In her statement, Morgan reflected on her time with the USWNT, describing it as more than just a soccer career.

“I grew up on this team,” she said in a statement released through the U.S. Soccer Federation. “It was the friendships and the unwavering respect and support among each other, the relentless push for global investment in women’s sports, and the pivotal moments of success both on and off the field. I am so incredibly honored to have borrowed the crest for more than 15 years.”

Morgan was a pivotal figure in Team USA’s success, including their FIFA Women’s World Cup victories in 2015 and 2019.

Reflecting on her career, she said, “I learned so much about myself in that time and so much of that is a credit to my teammates and our fans. I feel immense pride in where this team is headed, and I will forever be a fan of the USWNT. My desire for success may have always driven me, but what I got in return was more than I could have ever asked and hoped for.”

In addition to her retirement, Morgan also revealed some personal news, announcing that she is pregnant.

“We are so overjoyed,” she said. “Family means everything to me, and I wouldn’t be here without my family and my husband uplifting, motivating, and supporting me for the last 15 years as a professional athlete.”

Morgan’s final game is scheduled for September 8, marking the end of an era in women’s soccer.
