Brian Stelter is making a comeback at CNN after being ousted during the network’s restructuring over two years ago, as reported by Breitbart.

This return might raise eyebrows, but Stelter seems to be embracing a new chapter in his career, taking on the role of Chief Media Analyst.

He’ll be leading the “Reliable Sources” newsletter, a project he first launched in 2015. This move signals CNN’s intent to revive its once-popular media analysis segment, even after it was scrapped under former CEO Chris Licht’s shakeup.

Stelter shared the news himself, stating, “I’m returning to @CNN in a brand new role as Chief Media Analyst. I’ll be appearing on TV, developing digital content, and once again helming the Reliable Sources newsletter.”

Clearly, this isn’t the same Stelter who left in 2022. In his announcement, he hinted at a shift in perspective, mentioning that his time away gave him a fresh outlook on media.

After getting the boot from CNN, Stelter spent his time trying out various roles. From being a Harvard fellow to freelancing for over 20 different outlets, Stelter certainly didn’t stay idle.

He even mentioned spending time as a stay-at-home dad, which, according to him, helped him disconnect from the relentless news cycle. “I learned a whole lot about the attention economy and the information ecosystem,” he said, hinting that this new stint at CNN will have a different flavor.

CNN has seen better days since Stelter’s departure. The network’s efforts to pivot away from its overtly left-leaning reputation under Licht did little to boost ratings.

Licht himself didn’t last long as CEO, exiting after internal turmoil and staff dissatisfaction. He was replaced by media veteran Mark Thompson, as reported by the New York Post.

Now, with Stelter back in the fold, it appears the network is attempting to re-establish itself with familiar faces.

Notably, Stelter’s departure in 2022 came during a wave of high-profile exits, including former network president Jeff Zucker, who resigned after not disclosing a relationship with a colleague.

At the time, Stelter remarked on the privilege of running his long-standing show, “Reliable Sources,” especially during such a consequential time for media.

His return to CNN comes as the media landscape continues to evolve. Stelter admitted, “This time around will be different, because I am different.”

Whether CNN’s audience will embrace Stelter’s new outlook remains to be seen, but his return marks yet another chapter in the network’s ongoing efforts to balance its content amidst shifting viewership trends.
