Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) made headlines for all the wrong reasons during a Philadelphia rally on Tuesday, where he mocked rival Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) with a crude joke.

Walz, who is Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate, cracked the joke in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

“I can’t wait to debate the guy,” Walz said, prompting cheers from the audience. He followed up with, “That is, if he’s willing to get off the couch and show up.” The crowd responded with laughter and applause.

The joke referenced a fake meme that falsely claimed Vance had a sexual encounter with a couch, based on a fabricated citation from his memoir, Hillbilly Elegy.

This meme has circulated among some progressives who have sought to disparage Vance.

The originator of the hoax told Business Insider that the ease with which the false citation was accepted “hasn’t bolstered his faith in the critical-thinking skills of the electorate.”

Walz, who is supposed to represent Midwest decency, launched his campaign with a sexual joke grounded in misinformation.
