He made a statement on Instagram, where he expressed his frustration with local law enforcement’s response to the incident, citing an apathetic attitude towards the ongoing gun violence problem in Jacksonville.

Taveras stated, “Monday, July 29, 2024, at 10:05 pm, a group of armed men drove up on me at my mother’s house and tried to take my life. By the grace of God, I made it out with no injuries and was able to grab my own firearm and return fire in self-defense. This city is unforgiving, and it’s worse that JSO does nothing to correct the problem.”

Taveras revealed in his statement that his brother was also killed by gun violence in 2019, and his brother’s killers remain at large.

He believes both cases have not been given the attention they deserve.

The bantamweight stated that many other families face similar situations in Jacksonville, and he believes that local law enforcement is indifferent to the rising violence.
