Former President Donald Trump’s campaign confirmed on Saturday that its internal communications were compromised by hackers.

The confirmation came after Politico reported receiving internal Trump documents.

Steven Cheung, the campaign’s communications director, stated, “These documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, intended to interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our Democratic process.”

According to Cheung, a recent Microsoft report revealed that Iranian hackers breached the account of a “high-ranking official” in the U.S. presidential campaign in June 2024.

This timing coincided with President Trump’s selection of his Vice Presidential nominee.

Cheung also linked the hack to a broader pattern of aggression, noting, “The Iranians know that President Trump will stop their reign of terror just like he did in his first four years in the White House. Any media or news outlet reprinting documents or internal communications are doing the bidding of America’s enemies and doing exactly what they want.”

The documents sent to Politico reportedly included a 271-page “dossier” on Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, which dated back to February.

The dossier contained information on Vance’s past stances, statements, and criticisms of Trump under a section labeled “POTENTIAL VULNERABILITIES.”

Politico began receiving emails from an individual identifying themselves as “Robert” using an anonymous AOL account on July 22, shortly after Trump announced Vance as his running mate. “Robert” allegedly warned reporters not to question the source of the documents, stating, “Any answer to this question will compromise me and also legally restricts you from publishing them.”

The anonymous source also provided documents on Sen. Marco Rubio, who was reportedly considered as Trump’s vice presidential pick, and claimed to have a “variety of documents from [Trump’s] legal and court documents to internal campaign discussions.”

Former Acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell had this to say:

“The intel community knows that Joe and Kamala funded Iran with billions of dollars in sanctions relief, credit and cash.

Iran used that money to launch multiple wars through the Houthis, Hezbollah and Hamas.

Iran also used the Joe and Kamala money to target Donald Trump with a plot to assassinate Trump – and now they’ve used the Joe and Kamala money to hack the Trump campaign.

The intel community knows the dangers of funding Iran.” – Richard Grenell
