The Pineville Police Department has released the bodycam video capturing a May incident in which an officer tragically shot and killed a man.

The victim, identified as 46-year-old Dennis Bodden, reportedly failed to comply with 22 verbal orders issued by the police during the encounter.

The incident commenced outside a Food Lion store on Johnston Road following an alleged shoplifting incident and subsequently unfolded in the parking lot of a nearby apartment complex.

Bodden was already facing two outstanding felony warrants for multiple shoplifting incidents at the Pineville Food Lion.

Authorities revealed that between April and May, there were a total of six incidents involving Bodden, leading both the store and the police to ban him from the premises.

According to Bodden’s family, he had been grappling with severe mental health challenges that were exacerbated by the pandemic. His mother disclosed that he had been diagnosed with bipolar schizophrenia and often experienced confusion about his surroundings.

The released bodycam footage features Sgt. Adam Roberts approaching Bodden on May 14, following a distress call from the store.

Despite Roberts clearly identifying himself as a police officer, Bodden appeared surprised by the officer’s presence, possibly due to his wearing large headphones that may have affected his ability to hear.

As Bodden continued to walk away from Roberts, still holding a bag of groceries, the officer repeatedly instructed him to stop and get on the ground.

Ignoring these commands, Bodden walked toward Johnston Road, prompting Roberts to caution him against walking into traffic. Roberts ultimately pulled Bodden back onto the sidewalk, concerned for his safety.

Undeterred, Bodden proceeded to walk into the roadway. Roberts then attempted to handcuff him, but Bodden responded by biting Roberts in the arm.

In response, Roberts deployed a taser, instructing Bodden not to move. However, Bodden managed to get up and proceeded to cross Johnson Road, abandoning his groceries along the way.

Both men continued their slow walk into the Berkshire Apartment Complex, with Roberts awaiting backup. At one point, Roberts positioned himself in front of Bodden, stating firmly, “You ain’t getting away, bro,” before the two engaged in pushing and shoving.

When Pineville Police Officer Randell Down arrived at the scene, he deployed a taser, but it missed Bodden, leading the struggle to persist.

At this critical moment, the bodycam video captures Bodden turning back towards Roberts, with his hand extended in the direction of Roberts’ gun. In response, Roberts fired his weapon three times, deeming Bodden an “imminent threat.”

The footage then shows Bodden stumbling and subsequently falling face-first into a nearby grassy area.

It took more than 10 minutes for EMS to arrive after Bodden fell to the ground, as observed in Down’s camera footage.

Roberts expressed his concern about the risk of being bitten, acknowledging that Bodden had already bitten him severely. Down assured Roberts that he had successfully apprehended the suspect, affirming, “The good guys always win.”

It is worth noting that Bodden’s mother disagreed with the notion that her son was anything other than a good person.
