Shae Houston Courtroul, 57, wielded a knife and advanced on officers, resulting in an officer-involved shooting, confirmed Assistant Sheriff Jamie Prosser.
The incident occurred at 4:28 a.m. on Thursday, at the corner of Harmon Avenue and Paradise Road, while two officers were engaged in an unrelated pedestrian stop. When the pedestrian fled, additional help was requested, bringing two more officers to the scene.
Approaching the four officers in a white Nissan Kicks, Courtroul exited the vehicle wearing a hospital gown and brandishing a black folding knife, according to police accounts.
Body camera footage revealed Courtroul disembarking from the moving vehicle, prompting officers to call on him to drop the knife. Nevertheless, he continued to approach the officers aggressively, resulting in the use of lethal force, as per Prosser.
During the encounter, Officers Jeremy Johnson, 32, and Jacobo Solis, 22, discharged four rounds each, while Officers Dominick Nelson, 26, and Andrew Collins, 39, fired three and six rounds respectively. Courtroul sustained seven gunshot wounds, leading to his critical condition, although his condition has since stabilized at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.
Prior to the altercation, Courtroul had checked himself into a medical facility but left against the advice of hospital staff, Prosser added.
