Vice President Kamala Harris officially secured the Democratic nomination for president Monday evening, marking a historic first as a woman of color leads a major-party ticket.

This milestone was confirmed after results from the Democratic National Committee’s virtual roll call were released, showing overwhelming support for Harris.

According to Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison and Convention Chairwoman Minyon Moore, Harris earned the backing of 99% of pledged and automatic delegates. “Vice President Harris has historic momentum at her back as we embark on the final steps in officially certifying her as our Party’s nominee,” they said in a joint statement late Monday night.

Following the release of the results, convention secretary Jason Rae will certify the roll call.

Harris and her running mate will then formally accept the nomination, with Moore handling the final certification.

Harris achieved this feat within two weeks, capitalizing on Joe Biden’s suspension of his campaign last month.

No other Democrat contested Harris for the nomination, as Biden and other party leaders rallied behind her, avoiding the prospect of a brokered convention.

By Friday, Harris had secured the necessary delegates and earned the majority of convention votes. The virtual roll call, which began at 9 a.m. ET on Thursday, concluded with Harris receiving 2,350 votes by 1:16 p.m. ET the following day.

Harris, a former San Francisco district attorney, California attorney general, and junior senator from California, joined Biden’s 2020 campaign as his running mate.

She became the highest-ranking woman politician in the nation when Biden was inaugurated in January 2021.

She now becomes the second woman to lead a major-party ticket, following Hillary Clinton in 2016, and the second black person after former President Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012.

Harris’s nomination comes 52 years after Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman to run for the Democratic presidential nomination, launched her campaign.

Although the Democratic National Convention was initially scheduled to start on August 19 in Chicago, Democrats proceeded with the virtual roll call to avoid complications with state ballot deadlines.

A ceremonial roll call will still take place in Chicago. Biden, once expected to be the highlight of the DNC, is scheduled to give the opening remarks on the convention’s first night.

Harris is also expected to announce her running mate soon, who will join her on a seven-state battleground tour starting Tuesday in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

She has spent the weekend interviewing candidates for the role, including Governors Andy Beshear (D-KY), J.B. Pritzker (D-IL), Josh Shapiro (D-PA), and Tim Walz (D-MN), as well as Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ) and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
