A repeat offender on probation allegedly struck an NYPD officer with such force that she fell to the ground before other officers apprehended him on a Bronx sidewalk Thursday evening.

The incident, captured on video, highlights the increasing dangers faced by police officers in the line of duty.

The suspect, identified as 41-year-old Ernst Delma, reportedly punched the female officer in the face while she tried to break up an argument between him and a group of kids at approximately 7:10 p.m. on the corner of Rosedale and Randall avenues, according to law enforcement sources.

Bystander footage shows the officer’s partner moving in on Delma while other officers and witnesses tend to the injured officer, who is seen lying on the ground with a bloody face.

As the officer regains her footing, her partner delivers at least two blows to Delma during the struggle.

As Delma resists arrest, his pants and underwear fall down, exposing his bare backside in the chaotic scene. Spectators watched as Delma was eventually handcuffed and taken into custody.

The injured officer sustained a cut to her lip and was transported to a local hospital in stable condition, police said.

Delma faces charges including assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, and obstructing governmental administration. He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital for evaluation following the arrest.

Delma, who is on probation, has a history of numerous prior arrests, including for assault and burglary in recent years.

Patrick Hendry, President of the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association (PBA), criticized the justice system’s handling of repeat offenders. “Thankfully, our sister is recovering from this brutal assault. But this is exactly what happens when the justice system cares more about coddling criminals than backing up cops on the street,” Hendry stated.

“We’ll be watching to make sure this individual is charged appropriately and kept off the street. Our sister and her partner did their job. Now everyone else in the criminal justice system needs to do theirs.” – Patrick Hendry
