The Jamul-Dulzura Union School District has reported two incidents over consecutive days where migrants attempted to board school buses along their routes.

According to Superintendent Liz Bystedt in a notice sent to families, the first incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon along Route A near the intersection of Highway 94 and Cochera Via.

Bystedt described how three men were seen walking in the middle of the highway, attempting to stop the bus. The bus driver managed to navigate around the group, avoiding any direct confrontation.

The situation escalated the following morning on Wednesday, when a Route B school bus encountered approximately 20 individuals attempting to board while students were being picked up.

Fortunately, parents at the stop collaborated with the bus driver to secure the bus, ensuring that no unauthorized individuals could gain access and that all students remained safe.

While it remains unclear whether the two groups of migrants are related, the district has reported no injuries among students, staff, or the migrants involved in these incidents.

Superintendent Bystedt has communicated these concerns to several law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Border Patrol, California Highway Patrol, and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

Responding to the incidents, Kimberly King from the Sheriff’s Department affirmed the seriousness with which they are treating the situation. “The San Diego Sheriff’s Office was made aware of this incident today. We are conducting a follow-up investigation to determine if a criminal act has occurred. The Sheriff’s Office takes issues regarding student safety very seriously and are working with the school district in order to keep the students and our community safe,” King stated.

As a precautionary measure and to prevent further incidents, Superintendent Bystedt has announced that school buses will now bypass any stops where migrants are present, proceeding directly to the next scheduled stop.

She has advised parents to remain vigilant and to follow the bus to the next stop if their child’s usual pickup is bypassed.

In further response to these security concerns, the district’s director of maintenance and operations accompanied the buses this afternoon to monitor the situation and ensure that all routes proceeded without incident.

These disruptions come at a time when communities across the country are grappling with the challenges posed by increased migrations and the strain on local resources and infrastructure.

The Jamul-Dulzura Union School District is taking active steps to address these challenges, prioritizing student safety above all as they navigate this complex issue.
