A gang member identified as Joshua Dorsett shot and wounded two NYPD sergeants in Lower East Side on Thursday afternoon.

The sergeants were injured during a struggle with Dorsett, who is now facing charges including attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon, and robbery. Sgt. Carl Johnson, 43, of the 5th precinct, was shot in the groin, and Sgt. Christopher Leap, 34, of the 7th precinct, was grazed in the left leg by the same bullet.

Both officers were taken to Bellevue Hospital, with Leap being released later that evening and Johnson remaining hospitalized the next day.

Dorsett, identified as a known gang member by NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, reportedly robbed multiple women at a Mahjong Parlor before the confrontation with the sergeants.

The robber was apprehended after a struggle against a vehicle, during which Dorsett allegedly fired a shot.

The officers did not return fire. Dorsett, who has three prior arrests, was on probation and had checked in that morning before the incident.

He was previously involved in selling crack cocaine to an undercover cop and was sentenced to three years probation.

Dorsett was held at the 5th precinct overnight and was later charged with two counts of attempted murder of a police officer and two counts of attempted murder while in commission of a crime.

Police recovered a .45 Taurus semi-automatic pistol at the scene.

Two New York City Police officers were injured in a shooting incident that took place in Lower Manhattan on Thursday afternoon, according to police sources.
