Former President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had a phone conversation [1], their first since Trump left office in January 2021.
As Trump’s chances in the November election seem to increase, some world leaders, including Zelensky, have made gestures towards him in anticipation of a potential second term. Both leaders described the call as productive.
During the call, Zelensky congratulated Trump on winning the Republican presidential nomination and condemned an assassination attempt against Trump. Trump mentioned that Zelensky also spoke about unity among the American people during trying times.
Trump maintained a vague position on Ukraine, criticizing the ongoing war and urging both sides to seek a peaceful resolution. He expressed his intention, if elected president, to bring an end to the conflict and negotiate a peace deal.
Zelensky confirmed parts of Trump’s statements and emphasized the bipartisan support for Ukraine from the United States. He highlighted the continued Russian attacks on Ukrainian territory and expressed a desire to discuss peace measures with Trump at a future meeting.
Trump stated his commitment to ending the war in Ukraine promptly after taking office but did not provide specific details of his plan.
The phone call between Trump and Zelensky brings to mind their controversial 2019 call, which led to Trump’s first impeachment.
