Senior Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh met his demise while in Tehran to attend the inauguration of Iran’s newly appointed president, as confirmed by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and Hamas.

There are conflicting reports as to whether this strike was an airstrike or a bomb smuggled into the guesthouse.

Haniyeh, aged 62, had ascended to the position of Hamas’ political chief and had long been a prime target of Israel for retribution in connection with the October 7 massacre that claimed 1,200 lives.

Reports from Iranian media unveil that Haniyeh, together with his bodyguard, was fatally wounded at a residence in Tehran where they were lodged during Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian’s swearing-in event on Tuesday.

This deadly incident unfolded less than 24 hours after an Israeli military strike resulted in the demise of a key Hezbollah figure in Lebanon, marking another violent episode that heightens concerns of a potential escalation towards a broader conflict in the Middle East.
