It has been reported that Diaz, originally from Honduras, was in the U.S. unlawfully at the time of his arrest. According to sources from WSOC, Diaz had a run-in with Border Patrol along the Rio Grande in Mexico in 2019 when he was just 14 years old.

The series of shootings occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning in the Metro and Steele Creek Divisions, according to police.

On early Thursday morning, officers spotted a suspicious vehicle matching the description of a car associated with the shootings, made a traffic stop, and apprehended a juvenile suspect believed to be linked to the incidents.

The officers recovered a stolen firearm, shell casings, and an extended magazine from the vehicle.

Investigators suspect that the 16-year-old had intentions of further violent criminal activity. The suspect admitted to being involved in the shootings during a party that he and Diaz attended, ultimately leading to Diaz’s arrest.

The FBI provided assistance to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police in Diaz’s arrest.

Law enforcement officials have stated that the shootings are likely related based on the car’s description, shell casings, time frame, and proximity. Forensic lab testing has already confirmed the connection of at least three incidents, and further testing is ongoing to determine additional links.

The investigations into these shootings are still ongoing.
