At the Republican National Convention Senators Marsha Blackburn, John Barrasso, James Lankford, and Kevin Cramer confronted Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle, demanding that she “resign tonight or start answering our questions.”

The heated exchange took place as the senators chased Cheatle through the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, making it clear that they were not getting the responses they needed regarding the death threat to President Trump and allowing him to go on stage.

During their earlier briefing by Cheatle and FBI director Christopher Wray, the senators expressed frustration at being stuck in a queue and unable to obtain the answers they sought. Secret Service Deputy Director Ronald Rowe Jr. and FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate were also present on the call, revealing details about the suspect and the failure to prevent the assassination attempt.

The senators continued to press Cheatle, insisting that she owed the people and President Trump an explanation for the security failure.

Senator Blackburn later stated, “It is appalling that the Secret Service Director refused to answer our questions. This is one of the greatest security failures in the history of the agency. She can run, but she cannot hide. She is a failed leader and she needs to immediately step down from her position.”

Despite mounting calls for her resignation, Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi stated that Cheatle has no intentions to step down and is committed to leading the agency through internal investigations and strengthening its capabilities.

Many Republicans in Congress have joined the outcry for Cheatle’s resignation, with previous reports indicating her close ties to First Lady Jill Biden and her ascendancy to the Secret Service director role in 2022.

The showdown between the senators and Cheatle highlights the growing pressure on the agency and the leadership amidst a serious security breach, raising critical questions about the Secret Service’s ability to protect the President’s life and the need for accountability and transparency in addressing security lapses.
