The incident began when officers responded to a disturbance call around 9:15 a.m. on July 2 in the 2200 block of W Eubanks Street. A man was reportedly holding a gun to someone's head, prompting the police response, stated Capt. Valerie Littlejohn.

The suspect barricaded himself inside the home, firing shots at the police, who returned fire. Unfortunately, one officer was shot and taken to a nearby hospital and underwent successful surgery, said Littlejohn.

The police department is currently investigating to determine the events leading up to the incident. The officers involved in the gunfire will be on administrative leave with pay, as per standard procedure.
