Seattle Police arrested a 42-year-old man following a commercial burglary in South Seattle early Tuesday morning.

Patrol officers responded to a burglary report in the 4200 block of Rainier Avenue South at 2:05 a.m. Shortly after, another 911 call alerted authorities to an injured man a few blocks north of the crime scene.

The suspect was found near Rainier Avenue South and South Andover Street with a severe gunshot wound to his hand. Police administered first aid, including a tourniquet, before the Seattle Fire Department took over medical care.

The suspect was taken to Harborview Medical Center and subsequently arrested for Investigation of Burglary. Suspected narcotics were also discovered on his person, and he is set to be booked into King County Jail pending medical evaluation.

According to officers, the male suspect forcibly entered the business and encountered a 71-year-old businessman who was asleep at the time of the break-in. The businessman, armed with a firearm, shot the suspect in self-defense as he was wielding a knife.

The victim remained at the scene, cooperating with detectives. The firearm and shears believed to have been used by the suspect were recovered as evidence.

Detectives from the felony General Investigations Unit conducted a thorough investigation of the crime scene and assumed control of the case.
