Three suspects are behind bars after an incident unfolded outside a high-end shopping mall in Orange County, resulting in the death of a 69-year-old woman.

 

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, around 3:30 p.m. when a group of criminals targeted a husband and wife outside a Barnes and Noble bookstore at the renowned Fashion Island shopping center. Their intention was to rob the unsuspecting couple.

According to the Newport Beach Police Department, a struggle broke out between the victims and the assailants. Sensing trouble, one of the attackers made a desperate attempt to escape by jumping into a waiting getaway car, a white Toyota Camry. In the process, he even resorted to firing a gun.

However, tragedy struck as the other suspect successfully got into the car and recklessly drove away, tragically striking and instantly killing the 69-year-old woman.

 

The two men inside the fleeing vehicle later picked up their accomplice who had fired the shots, and together, they embarked on a high-speed chase with the police, racing from Orange County into Los Angeles County. The relentless pursuit ended when the trio abandoned the car in South Gate and tried to escape on foot. Fortunately, law enforcement apprehended all three of them.

 

 

Aerial footage captured by Sky5 showcased the aftermath of the incident. The Atrium Shops & Cafes, where the senseless tragedy occurred, became the focus of an intense police investigation. A canopy was erected to shield the deceased victim while detectives tirelessly worked to unravel the details.

 

 

Sgt. Oberon of the Newport Beach Police Department stated that the motive behind the crime remains unknown. Whether the criminals were after jewelry, shopping bags, or something else altogether will be determined during the course of the investigation.

 

Newport Beach Mayor Will O’Neill, speaking to KTLA, expressed both his condolences and his outrage. He emphasized the swift response from the Newport Police Department and neighboring law enforcement agencies, which played a key role in apprehending the suspects.

 

Directly addressing the criminals, the mayor did not mince his words. “To hell with these guys,” O’Neill declared. He further condemned their decision to come to their city and commit a heinous crime that ultimately ended in the tragic death of an innocent woman.

 

Investigators shared that the victim’s husband did not suffer any physical injuries during the botched robbery. However, he now must confront the devastating loss of his wife.
