In a major blow to the notorious Sinaloa Cartel, two alleged kingpins, Ismael Zambada Garcia, known as "El Mayo," and Joaquin Guzman Lopez, son of the cartel's co-founder, were apprehended today in El Paso, Texas.

This significant development came as a part of the Justice Department's alleged crackdown on the cartel's criminal activities, particularly its lethal fentanyl production and distribution networks.

Attorney General Merrick B. Garlandcondemned the Sinaloa Cartel as "one of the most violent and powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world."

He claimed that the Justice Department is resolute in holding every single member and leader of the cartel accountable for the devastating impact of their narcotics trade on American communities.

This latest action adds El Mayo and Joaquin Guzman Lopez to a growing list of Sinaloa Cartel bigwigs and cohorts who are facing justice in the United States.

Notable figures already detained include the cartel's other co-founder, Joaquin Guzman Loera, popularly known as "El Chapo"; another of El Chapo's sons and suspected cartel honcho, Ovidio Guzman Lopez; and the alleged chief sicario of the cartel, Néstor Isidro Pérez Salas, aka "El Nini."
