As Vice President Kamala Harris positions herself as the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, liberal media outlets are working overtime to rewrite her record, particularly her controversial tenure as the so-called “border czar.”

The media’s frantic efforts to sanitize her past come amid mounting Republican criticism over her handling of the border crisis.

Early in the Biden administration, Harris was tasked with addressing the root causes of migration from Central and South America. This role has been a cornerstone of GOP attacks as states continue to grapple with the ongoing migrant influx.

Yet, media outlets like ABC, CNN, MSNBC, The New York Times, TIME magazine, and Axios are now distancing her from the “border czar” title.

The New York Times led the charge with a July 17 article titled “Why Republicans Keep Calling Kamala Harris the ‘Border Czar,’” published during the Republican National Convention.

Reporters Jazmine Ulloa and Nicholas Nehamas claimed, “Ms. Harris was not, in fact, appointed border czar, nor was she tasked with addressing the broader problems plaguing the border itself.” They argued that Harris was only responsible for tackling the “root causes” of migration, such as drug violence and economic instability in countries like Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras.

Axios joined the narrative shift with an article by Stef W. Kight lamenting how “Harris border confusion haunts her new campaign.” Kight wrote, “The Trump campaign and Republicans have tagged Harris repeatedly with the ‘border czar’ title — which she never actually had.”

However, Kight’s own previous reporting contradicts this, as she once wrote, “President Biden is putting Vice President Harris in charge of addressing the migrant surge at the U.S.-Mexico border.”

The backlash was swift. Social media platform X, through Community Notes, pointed out Axios’s past references to Harris as the “border czar.” Embarrassed, Axios issued an editor’s note admitting they had previously used the term incorrectly.

TIME magazine’s Vera Bergengruen also jumped on the bandwagon with an article titled, “Kamala Harris Was Never Biden’s ‘Border Czar.’ Here’s What She Really Did.” TIME echoed the sentiment that Harris’s role was limited to diplomatic efforts in Central America, despite her infamous “do not come” message to Guatemalans.

The liberal media’s attempt to erase Harris’s “border czar” label is a clear effort to shield her from the fallout of the Biden administration’s border failures.
