The 4-3 decision by the court was clearly divided along ideological lines, with conservative justices opposing the reinstatement while liberals voted in favor of it. Justice Ann Walsh Bradley, who wrote the majority opinion, clarified that the decision does not mandate the use of drop boxes by municipal clerks, but rather affirms their lawful discretion to utilize secure drop boxes as per state law.

Critics argue that this decision goes against a previous ruling by the court’s conservative majority in 2022, which had deemed the use of ballot drop boxes as illegal. Justice Rebecca Bradley, in a dissenting opinion, expressed her concern that the court’s majority was effectively relaxing regulations on absentee voting, potentially tipping the scales in future elections.

This decision has sparked a wave of conservative backlash, with some seeing it as an attempt to undermine the legislature’s authority in governing the rules of absentee voting. The use of unmanned drop boxes has been a contentious issue, with concerns raised about the potential for fraud and lack of accountability in the collection and handling of absentee ballots.

As the November presidential election draws near, the debate over the use of unmanned drop boxes is likely to intensify, further fueling the ongoing political divide surrounding election integrity.
