Early morning gunshots on the south side of America’s third largest city, Chicago, on Independence Day resulted in two mothers dead and three children fighting for life.
The shootings left Nakeeshia Strong, a 46-year-old mother of three, dead, and three young children aged 5, 7, and 8 fighting for their lives. Family friend Frank Mixon was woken to the sound of the gunshots and describes his shock at seeing family members shot and his mother now deceased.

The early morning attack took place on 7100 block of South Woodlawn Avenue when two vehicles pulled up and a group of individuals got out and began shooting. The event saw five people shot, including Strong and her cousin, 24-year-old Caprice Edwards, who died whilst shielding her 1-year-old from the gunfire. The three children were injured with two belonging to Edwards and the 8-year old to Strong.
A neighbor who heard the shots described seeing several men in ski masks approaching the house that was targeted and then quickly fleeing the scene after they had discharged their weapons.

The police recovered both handgun and rifle casings in the vicinity of the scene and noted the shooting was likely to have started with a personal dispute. Deputy Chief Don Jerome asked for anyone with information to come forward.
In response to the events, Community Activist Rabbi Michael Ben Yosef has offered a $2,000 reward for any information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of any shooter. Alderman Desmond Yancy from the 5th ward stated that "Personal conflict and guns have become a bad combination." and called for an end to the senseless violence.
