Gunfight With Homicide Suspect Caught On Camera, Detective, Suspect Shot [VIDEO]

Detective Carlos Diaz was wounded when homicide suspect Miqueal Williams fired at him during an attempted arrest [1] in Madison on Monday.

Both men are now receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries at Skyline Medical Center. Williams has an ongoing legal case regarding the fatal shooting of Samuel Edwards Jr. on March 4 at an apartment complex on Buena Vista Pike.

Undercover officers were provided with information that Williams was visiting a friend, and they intercepted him and a woman as they entered a car. Williams then opened fire, and Diaz was struck in the leg wound.

Officers returned fire, causing Williams to drop his weapon while on the ground.

Diaz works as part of the TITANS (The Investigative Team Addressing Neighborhood Shootings) Unit, which plays a crucial part in locating individuals wanted for violent crimes, mostly related to gunfire. Diaz, an experienced law enforcement veteran, arrived in Nashville in November 2022 after serving with the New York City Police Department.

Detective Joseph Gonzales confronted Williams through the open driver-side door of the vehicle, firing at him through the open passenger-side door.

Both Diaz and Gonzales’ body camera footage is available on YouTube. Diaz’s camera wasn’t recording audio when the incident happened, but his footage is in real-time. Gonzales’s is also in real-time.

Both officers have been put on normal administrative assignment while the shooting is investigated.

John Drake, the Chief of the Nashville Police, emphasized the gravity of the situation and noted the ongoing criminal activity in the community.

The TITANS Unit is central to Nashville’s precision policing strategy, working with homicide units and other components to locate and arrest dangerous individuals.
