A 16-year-old girl in Palm Bay, Florida, found herself in police custody over the weekend after allegedly murdering her mother and her mother's boyfriend.
Julia Egler, who had been in the process of transitioning to the opposite sex, was charged with two counts of premeditated first-degree murder for the deaths of Kelley McCollom and Matthew Szejnrok.
Initially, Egler concocted a tale of a home invasion, hoping to dupe law enforcement into believing she was an innocent witness to the brutal double homicide. Investigators unraveled the ruse, and Egler admitted to orchestrating the killings.
The teen attributed her actions to disagreements with her mother over her gender transition, claiming her mother "was not very accepting."

The incident unfolded just after midnight when Egler dialed 911 to report a home invasion at her residence on Bencher Road in Palm Bay. She initially spun a false narrative of a man breaking in and attacking the victims, but the Palm Beach Police caught on when the evidence didn't add up.
As investigators dug deeper, Egler confessed to using a .38 caliber revolver stolen from her mother's room to carry out the act.
During her interrogation, Egler owned up to the murders, attributing the heinous act to mounting disputes over her transition in the preceding weeks.
She expressed dissatisfaction with her mother's lack of support for her transition and disapproval of her mother dating a 22-year-old.
