U.S. District Judge Peter Sheridan delivered a blow to New Jersey’s strict gun control measures by declaring the state’s AR-15 ban unconstitutional.
Judge Sheridan based his ruling on the precedents set by the Supreme Court cases of Heller (2008) and the recent Bruen (2022) decision.

In his statement, Judge Sheridan emphasized, “The AR-15 Provision of the Assault Firearms Law is unconstitutional under Bruen and Heller as to the Colt AR-15 for use of self-defense within the home.”
This ruling highlights the importance of protecting citizens’ rights to self-defense, particularly in their own residences.
Notably, Judge Sheridan highlighted the Bruen decision’s impact, stating that it renders any blanket restriction on firearms commonly used for self-protection as unconstitutional.
While this decision was a significant victory for Second Amendment advocates, Judge Sheridan upheld the “high capacity” magazine ban included in New Jersey’s broader “assault weapons” ban.
Reacting to the ruling, New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin (D) expressed his intention to challenge Judge Sheridan’s decision regarding AR-15s.
