Black Lives Matter (BLM), a radical left-wing activist group, has denounced the Democratic National Convention’s plans to nominate Vice President Kamala Harris as the presumptive Democratic nominee.

In a statement issued yesterday, the group has called on the DNC to put in place a process that allows for public participation in the nomination process ahead of the August convention.

The group, which received recognition for spearheading the nationwide protests that occurred in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd, said that the current nomination process lacks democracy and strongly disagrees with the installation of Kamala Harris as the presumptive nominee.

The group has questioned that a 24-hour process of talking to party bosses is not democratic and demanded the Democratic party create a process of public participation in the nomination process. BLM has stated that installing Kamala Harris and the unknown vice president without a public voting process would make the Democratic Party a party of hypocrites.

Joe Biden’s exit from the presidential race and nominating Harris as the candidate for the top ticket raised internal party pressure against Biden. Undoubtedly, this move could lead to the manipulation of Black voices by Democratic Party elites and billionaire donors.

BLM has noted that the current democratic principles disregarded by the Democratic Party are unacceptable and call for decisive action to protect the integrity of the dialogue and voices of Black voters.

While BLM isn’t criticizing Kamala or Black women’s qualifications or capabilities, BLM is seriously questioning the nomination process for the Democratic Party.

Shalomyah Bowers, one of BLM’s leaders, emphasized that democracy is at the heart of the resulting frustration among the group’s participants. The group is serious about the process that will lead to the nomination of Kamala Harris and the unknown vice president. They will need a people-powered process—anything less is unserious in the question of democracy.

The nomination of Kamala Harris shows the kind of political climate practiced within the modern Democratic Party, where things are done behind closed doors, depriving the public of the power to express their democratic rights.
