The chaos erupted as families gathered at Corlears Hook Park for Independence Day celebrations when a speeding gray Ford F-150 barreled through an intersection, careening onto the sidewalk and into the park itself, where the victims were enjoying a barbecue.
The truck, weighing an average of 5,000 pounds, came to rest on top of four victims, requiring first responders to use specialized equipment to extract them.
The injured were rushed to various hospitals in the area, with four individuals fighting for their lives and three others in serious condition, according to FDNY Chief Michael Myers.
While officers apprehended the intoxicated driver at the scene, witnesses expressed shock and disgust at the reckless behavior that led to the tragedy.
“I don’t understand how a person can get into a car intoxicated or people with them and let them drive. Knowing they can alter the lives of the people around them in such an intense and tragic way,” said one witness, who had hoped to show her out-of-town sister a fun Fourth of July.
Surveillance footage captured the horrifying moment when the truck crashed through the park, showing the vehicle speeding with no signs of slowing down before hitting the victims.
Residents of the neighborhood, who have lived there for decades, refuted any suggestion that nearby construction or inadequate signage were factors in the incident, emphasizing that the driver’s reckless speed was the primary cause.
As the investigation continues, the community reels from the shock of the unprecedented tragedy, with longtime residents like Abdo Yahya expressing disbelief at the violence that shattered the holiday celebrations.
The driver, taken into custody by authorities, hails from the Bronx, though their identity has not been disclosed as the investigation unfolds.
