Details about the victims and the circumstances leading up to the shooting, including the number of perpetrators involved, were not readily available.
Rochester Police Captain Greg Bello addressed the media, asserting, “At this point, we don’t know how many people were shooting. We are trying to work our way through as many witnesses as we can.” Police authorities later confirmed their pursuit of multiple suspects, though the precise number of gunmen remained undisclosed.
Rochester Police Chief David Smith stated during a press briefing, “We are looking for more than one person. I can’t clarify or quantify if they were part of this gathering or if they came from the outside.” The identity of the deceased victim was withheld pending notification of their family members.
Late Sunday night, investigators meticulously combed the crime scene and examined ballistic evidence on the expansive field. Bello appealed to the public for any videos and tips that could aid the authorities in their ongoing investigation.

“Anything on who decided to — on a Sunday afternoon where everybody’s out barbequing, having a good time — decided to pull out a gun for whatever reason whether there’s a dispute going, short term, long term, whatever it was… Somebody that pulled out a gun, obviously, that’s incredibly unacceptable in our society,” remarked Bello.
As the search for the suspects continued, Chief Smith issued a stark warning, “To the folks who did this, I will be seeing you.” Maplewood Park, where the tragic incident occurred, is renowned for its “breathtaking scenic views,” according to the city’s website, making the shooting all the more shocking and distressing.
