WNBA Hits Record Viewership Thanks to Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese

The Indiana Fever’s 91-83 victory over the Chicago Sky on Sunday wasn’t without controversy, but nor was it devoid of viewers.

Rather the game drew nearly 2.3 million viewers, according to CBS Sports. This rating marks the highest for any WNBA game in 23 years, driven by fans eager to witness the on-court rivalry between the Fever’s Caitlin Clark and the Sky’s Angel Reese.

The WNBA has seen a steady increase in viewership over the years, significantly boosted by the arrival of the 2024 rookie class. Clark’s popularity, reflected in massive ratings and sold-out arenas, is a key driver.

However, while she is the cream of the crop, she is not the only rookie contributing to the league’s growth. Reese, her teammate Kamilla Cardoso, and the Los Angeles Sparks’ Cameron Brink have also garnered large followings that have transitioned to the WNBA.

For the game itself, Clark delivered an impressive performance, shooting 7-of-11 from the field and scoring 23 points, along with eight rebounds and nine assists. Reese continued her streak of double-doubles, achieving her sixth consecutive with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

“From preseason through the end of May, the 2024 rookie class contributed meaningfully on the court and continued to drive fan engagement,” the WNBA stated on June 10. “Throughout Tip-off Week, four of the five moments that drove the most engagement on social channels featured highlights of Clark, Reese, Brink, or the Las Vegas Aces’ Kate Martin. WNBA merchandise sales have increased by 236 percent year-over-year, with Clark, Reese, and Brink ranking in the top five for jersey sales during the first week of the season.”

The rivalry between Clark and Reese could become a pivotal element for the league, potentially lifting the entire WNBA to new heights.
