A recent poll conducted by the Washington Post revealed a surprising sentiment across six swing states that Joe Biden secured in the 2020 election. Former President Donald Trump emerged as the preferred candidate for protecting democracy, topping Biden by 11 points.

The poll, conducted in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, asked 3,515 registered voters to express their views on which candidate they believed would better handle threats to democracy in the U.S. The results indicated that 44% of respondents favored Trump, while 33% expressed confidence in Biden. Meanwhile, 16% of voters opted for neither candidate, and 7% preferred both.

This outcome raises concerns among some Democrats, particularly as Biden's reelection strategy has heavily focused on the theme of democracy. The narrative has faced criticism, especially in the aftermath of multiple legal challenges against Trump and his conviction by a Manhattan jury in May.

Moreover, statistics from various polls consistently point to inflation, immigration, and crime as the foremost concerns among voters, with Trump holding a favorable position in addressing these issues.
A Democrat strategist closely associated with the Biden campaign expressed unease about the current state of affairs, highlighting a perceived lack of acknowledgement and a coherent plan to rectify the situation. Another individual within Biden's circle conveyed apprehension about raising doubts or skepticism regarding the current path for fear of appearing disloyal.
Justin Gest, a professor specializing in policy and government at George Mason University, emphasized the concerning dissonance between the public's perception of Biden's stewardship of democracy and its implications for his reelection prospects.
