USC Loses Second 5-Star Recruit in 24 Hours

USC’s 2025 recruiting class has taken a significant hit with the decommitment of five-star defensive tackle Justus Terry, marking the second top prospect to withdraw from the Trojans within 24 hours. Terry announced his decision on X, stating, “My recruitment is open!! #Decommitted.”

This move follows five-star defensive end Isaiah Gibson’s decommitment, which shocked the Trojan football community.

Justus Terry, a 6-foot-5, 270-pound lineman initially committed to Georgia in January 2023 but reopened his recruitment, later pledging to USC earlier this spring. With Terry’s decommitment, the defensive line of USC’s recruiting class has thinned considerably.

Decommitments in college football, coupled with the transfer portal, have a profound impact on team rosters and recruiting strategies. When top recruits withdraw their verbal commitments, it sends shockwaves through the program, affecting team rankings and forcing coaches to scramble and reassess their plans. The transfer portal introduces another layer of complexity, allowing players to switch schools more easily in search of better opportunities or increased playing time. This added mobility heightens the competition for top talent, as programs not only strive to attract high school prospects but also work to retain and recruit college players seeking a fresh start.
