According to the US Army, this status “applies when an incident occurs or intelligence is received indicating some form of terrorist action or targeting against personnel or facilities is likely.”
An official stationed at a European base revealed to CNN that this threat level has not been seen in at least a decade, suggesting that it usually indicates an active and reliable threat.
The cause behind the heightened security measures remains undisclosed, but European authorities have been cautioning about a potential terror threat in light of the forthcoming Paris Olympics in July and the ongoing European football championships in Germany.
To address these concerns, the German government has enlisted 580 international police officers to reinforce security alongside German officers. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser stated, “We are preparing ourselves for all conceivable dangers: from Islamist terror to violent criminals and hooligans,” ahead of the tournament.
Similarly, France has taken significant measures to mitigate potential terror threats as it gears up for the upcoming Olympic Games. Since March, the country has raised its national security alert system to the highest level, according to the US embassy in France.
The US embassy in France issued a cautionary statement, emphasizing, “French authorities actively monitor terrorist threats from organized groups and radicalized individuals. Attacks may happen with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, major sporting and cultural events, and other public areas that attract large numbers of civilians.”
