UConn women's basketball head coach Geno Auriemma spoke out in defense of Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark this week. The young WNBA star has brought newfound attention and success to the league, but it has not been without loads of drama and controversy.
However, while Auriemma praised Clark he didn't offer up the same positivity toward her fans. Rather, the highly successful UConn coach criticized Clark's fans claiming they have set her up for failure.
Specifically he said on a show this week "the delusional fanbase that follows her disrespected the WNBA players...She's third or fourth in betting odds for WNBA MVP. These people are so disrespectful and unknowledgeable that it gives women's basketball a bad name."
The coach went on to explain that her youth and the physicality of the league would likely prevent her from reaching the MVP pinnacle this year, while also acknowledging the fact that her team isn't helping much. The Indiana Fever were 2-9 at the time of his comments.

Despite the challenges, Auriemma praised Clark for how she has handled the rigors of the WNBA. "I think she's handling it great," he said. "She talks a lot of trash and gets it back, so she deserves everything she gets because she gives as good as she gets."
One thing is for certain: Given the fact that the season is only a third over, we can all expect a great deal more controversy, debate and hopefully, somewhere in there, some great basketball for the rising league.
