Former President Donald Trump’s campaign has experienced an overwhelming surge in donations, raising a staggering $54.8 million just 24 hours after he was convicted on Thursday in a Manhattan trial. The conviction came as a result of 34 counts of falsifying business records, as brought forward by Democratic District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
Upon the announcement of the verdict, the Trump campaign’s donation site encountered technical difficulties, displaying a 500 error message stating “something went wrong.” However, the temporary setback did not deter supporters, as small-donor contributions continued to pour in, resulting in a combined total of nearly $35 million by Friday morning.
Senior advisers to the campaign, Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita, released a statement attributing the surging donations to the nation’s growing frustration with Joe Biden and his Democratic allies, whom they accuse of politicizing the legal system. They emphasized that this momentum was only the beginning, expressing confidence in Trump’s previous statement that the “real verdict” will be rendered on November 5th.
The charges leading to Trump’s conviction centered around his payment of $420,000 to former attorney Michael Cohen, which he listed as “legal services” over a span of 12 months in 2017. Prosecutors argued that these payments were an attempt to secure a nondisclosure agreement with Stormy Daniels, a porn star who allegedly had an affair with the former president during the 2016 election campaign.
During the trial, Judge Merchan instructed the jurors that they did not have to unanimously agree on the specific meaning of “unlawful” in relation to Trump’s alleged attempts to influence the election. It is worth noting that the judge faced scrutiny in April 2023 for making political donations of $35 to Democratic candidates prior to the 2020 election, including $15 to Joe Biden. However, the judge’s impartiality remained intact throughout the trial.

While Joe Biden refrained from commenting on Trump’s conviction immediately after the verdict, he eventually addressed the trial in a separate address concerning matters in the Middle East.
