The top-ranked Tennessee Volunteers entered Sunday’s elimination game against No. 3 Texas A&M having struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities while in Omaha. Through the seventh inning of game two the Vols were 0-for-16 with runners on base and 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
However, it only took one swing from one of Tennessee’s hottest hitters, Dylan Dreiling, to turn the game around. In the top of the seventh inning, Dreiling hit a go-ahead two-run homer, putting Tennessee ahead 2-1.
This was Dreiling’s second consecutive game with a home run, and it provided the Volunteers with the momentum they needed. Catcher Cal Stark added to the lead with a two-run homer in the eighth and Tennessee went on to win 4-1, forcing a decisive Game 3 in the 2024 College World Series.
In game 3 both teams are expected to use a combined pitching strategy as their best pitchers have already started. Tennessee will look to capitalize on their late homers in game 2 and reignite their offense, which has been one of the best in the nation prior to Omaha.
