Teen MMA Fighter Foils Alleged Car Theft in Indianapolis (VIDEO)

A tense confrontation unfolded on Monday when an 18-year-old teen, Gavin Archer, employed his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu skills to subdue a man he suspected of attempting to steal his car outside a local gym in Indianapolis, Indiana as reported by WISH-TV [1].  However, the alleged thief, Andrew Wilkerson, claims the incident was a misunderstanding linked to his job as a mechanic at the nearby muffler shop.

Caught on Camera

Surveillance footage from the 10th Planet Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym shows the moment Archer approached Wilkerson, who appeared to be tampering with Archer’s vehicle. Archer confronted Wilkerson, questioning his actions. According to Archer, the situation escalated rapidly when Wilkerson allegedly attacked him.

“I was kind of getting a little nervous, and he just straight up attacked me. It all happened so fast you don’t really have time to think,” Archer explained.

Wilkerson, however, tells a different story. He maintains he was simply trying to access a car that matched the description of one scheduled for service at the muffler shop.

Misunderstanding or Justified Response?

The security footage captures a heated exchange between the two men. Wilkerson claims he was only performing his duties when Archer confronted him and threatened to call the police. “I’ve worked there for a few months. I know what the gym does. I know this guy’s a trained fighter, so when he says, ‘Don’t go anywhere,’ the last thing I want to do now is turn around and not be able to see this guy,” Wilkerson said.

According to Wilkerson, he felt threatened and reacted defensively when Archer pushed the gym door open, which he interpreted as an aggressive move. This led to a physical altercation where Archer, a Jiu Jitsu blue belt, overpowered Wilkerson, delivering several punches and placing him in a chokehold before dragging him out of the camera’s view.

Archer’s Perspective

Archer, reflecting on the incident, emphasized the importance of deescalation in martial arts. “Deescalating the situation is Number 1. Best martial art is running away, but, if you can’t, you just need to have something else,” he stated, suggesting that Wilkerson’s actions forced him to respond physically.

Aftermath and Police Involvement

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department reported that they documented the incident but did not make any arrests. Wilkerson’s employment at the muffler shop has since been terminated, and Archer has expressed intentions to pursue charges against him.
