San Jose, CA – In an incident on Thursday, May 2, 2024, a man identified as Kevin Briones, 33, shot and wounded two San Jose police officers at a local motel, court records reveal. Briones, who was the subject of two arrest warrants, allegedly opened fire when the officers responded to a domestic violence call involving a woman who had a restraining order against him.
The gun battle unfolded in an upper-floor hallway of the Extended Stay America on San Ignacio Avenue, where Officer Jamie Arredondo was seriously injured after being hit multiple times by Briones’ gunfire. Another officer, Joseph Desroches, pulled Arredondo to safety and applied a tourniquet to his partner before realizing he had been grazed by a bullet himself. Desroches was treated at a hospital and later released.
According to police reports, Briones showed up at the hotel within an hour of the initial police visit, prompting the woman to call for help again. When officers arrived, they saw Briones carrying a skateboard and walking away. They ordered him to stop, but Briones responded by reaching into a duffel bag. Desroches attempted to detain him, but Briones ran away, dropping a shirt and brandishing a stolen 9mm Glock pistol. He fired eight rounds at the pursuing officers, hitting Desroches and Arredondo.
In an attempt to escape, Briones broke through a plate-glass window and fell three stories, causing severe injuries, including a fractured neck and collapsed lung. He was later apprehended while trying to hide in nearby bushes.
Briones, who remains in critical condition with multiple injuries, is scheduled to be arraigned on charges of attempted murder and illegally possessing a firearm. It was later revealed that Briones had active arrest warrants for domestic violence and probation violation and was prohibited from owning firearms due to a past criminal threats conviction.
After battling through three major surgeries, Officer Arrendondo was finally released from the hospital five weeks after being injured in the line of duty. He was greeted by fellow officers who lined the hospital halls, giving him a well-deserved round of applause as he was wheeled down the corridor.
